History

A tower and a name

Perched on the picturesque Trulli hill in Kato Pyrgos stands a medieval tower. A silent sentinel from the Byzantine era, it served as a beacon for friendly vessels and a watchful eye on the horizon. Despite its grandeur, it didn’t inspire the village’s name, Kato Pyrgos, which emerged later.

The true ‘tower’, or Pyrgos, lies further inland in Pano Pyrgos.

The origin of the “Pyrgos” village name is intertwined with the mysterious remnants found at the “Avli” site, a Greek term meaning “court”. Was it a guardian’s dwelling, a secluded Latin monastery, or a feudal lord’s grand seat?
